I’ve heard countless horror stories from the hundreds of parents I work with each year—stories about their children feeling isolated, bullied, or just plain lost during recess. When I was a child, recess was the most fun part of the day. We played games, ran freely, and while bullying existed, it wasn’t at the level it is now.

With over 30 years working with children and families, and seeing what schools need, I know the schools that succeed are those who treat recess as a chance to teach social skills, inclusion, and respect—not just a break. Simple, proven strategies can turn recess into a space where every child feels safe, included, and ready to grow.

That’s why I created Reimagining Recess — a hands-on training for school staff. It equips teachers and supervisors with the tools to prevent bullying, encourage inclusive play, and rebuild recess as a time of joy and connection.

My name is Renée Austin. I’m a mother of three amazing adult children and have spent over 30 years working closely with children and families in schools, homes, and communities. With a Master’s degree in Child and Youth Care and certifications in parenting coaching and sensory integration, I’ve dedicated my life to helping children thrive by supporting the adults who care for them.

Through my work, I’ve seen how powerful the right guidance and tools can be in creating safe, nurturing environments where children feel included, respected, and confident. I’m passionate about turning recess—the time kids often dread—into their favorite part of the day, where they can play, connect, and grow.

I created Reimagining Recess because I believe every child deserves that chance. I’m honored to share my experience and passion with schools committed to making recess a time of joy and belonging.
